How Language Ideologies Shape Language: The Case of Hebrew in Israel

בדרך כלל, דוברות ודוברים רואים את שפתם כאובייקט בלתי-משתנה המוכתב מלמעלה, כזה שיש בו ״נכון״ ו״לא-נכון״ חד משמעיים. נדבר על ההשלכות של התפיסה הזו, עם דוגמאות בעיקר מארצות הברית ומישראל. נכיר גם את התפיסה הבלשנית, שממשיגה את השפה ״מלמטה למעלה״, כלומר, מרמת הדובר.ת לרמת הקהילה.

The central question that will accompany us throughout the lecture is – what is a language? And more specifically, what is considered part of the language, and what is considered a deviation from it? Where is it appropriate to draw the lines between concepts such as “dialect,” “error,” “slang,” and “personal style”?  Typically, speakers perceive their language as an unchanging object dictated from above, one that has clear-cut “right” and “wrong.” We will discuss the implications of this perception, with examples mainly from the United States and Israel. We will also get to know the linguistic perspective, which conceptualizes language “from the bottom up,” that is, from the level of the speaker to the level of the community.  The lecture will be given in light Hebrew and is intended for advanced Hebrew students and native speakers.
