What stories about people can food tell? How do different communities in Israel use food to celebrate, to remember, to resist, or simply to feel at home? And what can we learn about this place by looking at what - and how - we eat? In this course, we will explore Israel’s diverse communities through their culinary traditions. We will look at food as a doorway into culture: from family dishes and holiday meals to street food, markets, and contemporary food trends. Along the way, we will get to know the histories, values, and everyday lives of groups living in this land - Mizrahi, Ashkenazi, Palestinian, Ethiopian, Russian-speaking communities, as well as refugees and migrant workers. Together, we will watch short videos, read menus and personal stories, discuss recipes, and learn the vocabulary of food and identity. Through these tastes and tales, we will examine how food reflects belonging and exclusion, memory and migration, tradition and change. This course is designed for Hebrew learners who are beyond the basics and communicate in all tenses. Here you will gain confidence, expand your vocabulary, and develop the ability to discuss complex social topics in Hebrew - making your voice a part of the conversation. *** Early Bird Price Start at - 1300 NIS - Until 14/06 Reduced Price Start at - 1400 NIS - Until 05/07 Full Price Start at - 1500 NIS - Until first lesson of the course We have made a small change in our pricing structure and are now offering a sliding scale in order to give you the opportunity to donate 100 or 200 shekels when you buy a course. Take a boat And cross the sea of fire Zelda Hope is a political act. Hope is ambivalent. Hope is a practice. It is the choice, again and again, not to ignore the deep pain of our present reality but to act as if a better world is possible, in order to make it so. Belief in a just, shared future in Israel-Palestine seems rarer than ever since the 7th of October, the devastation of Gaza, and Israel's current trajectory of perpetual war. But it has never been more urgent. In this course we will practice ambivalent and radical hope together, even if we don’t always feel it. How? We will try to understand the deeper meanings of hope, despair, nostalgia and imagination - because feelings are both an individual experience and a collective phenomenon. They reflect culture and politics and are expressed throughout society. For example - perhaps Israelis use so much single use plastic because constant uncertainty and unprocessed trauma has made us nihilistic and disconnected from the consequences of our actions? We will also explore Israeli, Palestinian and other responses to our current crisis and beyond it. We will look at initiatives that broaden the horizon of political possibility and engage with intellectual and artistic works that have a crucial role both in presenting the reality of the past and present, and in insisting on the possibility of a future with justice and freedom for all. All advanced learners are welcome to this course. We will be using a variety of interactive activities, and giving plenty of space for learners to express themselves and their ideas in speaking and writing. Grammar and other linguistic elements will be taught in an integrated way depending on the needs and interests of the students.
