In this course we will learn about Arab cinema from the twentieth century, watch movies, get to know actors and try to understand different Arab social and cultural issues through cinematic scenes. Together we will analyze the components of the story, the design of the characters and the main themes that the cinematic work deals with. In the course, we will visit (albeit virtually) a number of Arab cinemas that emerged and shaped the general Arab culture in the twentieth century. The course will be divided into three parts so that in the first part we will focus on cultural and creative centers in the Arab world like Cairo, Damascus, Beirut, Baghdad and more. In the second part we will talk about the different genres and the expression of Arab culture in movies. And in the third part we will focus more on the different players and their work. What's going on in East Jerusalem and how did we get here?! Why do most Palestinian Jerusalemites not have Israeli citizenship? What does the expansion of settlements in East Jerusalem mean for daily life on the ground? How are residency revocations being used as a political tool - and who is affected? What role does East Jerusalem play in the broader question of a future Palestinian state? Together we will explore these questions and many more, while gaining skills to express yourself in Hebrew. We will learn about different neighborhoods and sectors of Palestinian Jerusalemite society, about historical processes as well as current events. We will use a variety of different methods and sources of information: discussions, social media, video clips, activities, and presentations. This course is for learners who are beyond the basic conversational level and can communicate in Hebrew in the present and past tense and form their own sentences. You will get more creative and confident with the language and be able to communicate with more complexity. Take a boat And cross the sea of fire Zelda Hope is a political act. Hope is ambivalent. Hope is a practice. It is the choice, again and again, not to ignore the deep pain of our present reality but to act as if a better world is possible, in order to make it so. Belief in a just, shared future in Israel-Palestine seems rarer than ever since the 7th of October, the devastation of Gaza, and Israel's current trajectory of perpetual war. But it has never been more urgent.  In this course we will practice ambivalent and radical hope together, even if we don’t always feel it.  How? We will try to understand the deeper meanings of hope, despair, nostalgia and imagination - because feelings are both an individual experience and a collective phenomenon. They reflect culture and politics and are expressed throughout society. For example - perhaps Israelis use so much single use plastic because constant uncertainty and unprocessed trauma has made us nihilistic and disconnected from the consequences of our actions? We will also explore Israeli, Palestinian and other responses to our current crisis and beyond it. We will look at initiatives that broaden the horizon of political possibility and engage with intellectual and artistic works that have a crucial role both in presenting the reality of the past and present, and in insisting on the possibility of a future with justice and freedom for all. All advanced learners are welcome to this course. We will be using a variety of interactive activities, and giving plenty of space for learners to express themselves and their ideas in speaking and writing.
