This course bridges the gap between structured Beginner Hebrew and the more open, less-filtered world of Intermediate learning. It encourages learners to move beyond fixed patterns, develop creativity in the language, and gain confidence improvising in Hebrew- even outside the comfort zone of everyday topics, while continuing to build and deepen key grammatical structures. Through discussions, video clips, and short texts, the course introduces a broad view of the realities that shape life in Israel. Topics include questions of who lives here and under what conditions, geopolitics and occupation, past and current events, gender and LGBTQ+ life and history, different forms of community, and social dynamics such as center versus periphery, alongside cultural and political expression and an introduction to the political system. Designed for advanced beginners and early intermediate learners, the course combines language development with critical engagement, supporting students in using Hebrew to navigate complex ideas and real-life contexts. This course is conversational, but you will also study Arabic reading and writing. And as for speaking: you'll learn the Palestinian dialect (Amia) meaning you'll be ready to go ahead and engage with your surroundings in Arabic! Our classes are based on the principle of immersion, meaning we'll stick to Arabic in class as much as possible- but if we need to explain in a different language, our go-to-language is English to accommodate the diversity of backgrounds among our students. In this course we will learn about Arab cinema from the twentieth century, watch movies, get to know actors and try to understand different Arab social and cultural issues through cinematic scenes. Together we will analyze the components of the story, the design of the characters and the main themes that the cinematic work deals with. In the course, we will visit (albeit virtually) a number of Arab cinemas that emerged and shaped the general Arab culture in the twentieth century. The course will be divided into three parts so that in the first part we will focus on cultural and creative centers in the Arab world like Cairo, Damascus, Beirut, Baghdad and more. In the second part we will talk about the different genres and the expression of Arab culture in movies. And in the third part we will focus more on the different players and their work. We will get straight into communicating in Hebrew, as well as learning to read and write, and understanding the fundamental grammatical structures. By the end of the course, you'll have learned vocabulary and sentence structures for simple day-to-day interactions and tasks such as introducing yourself, polite requests and shopping. What's going on in East Jerusalem and how did we get here?! Why do most Palestinian Jerusalemites not have Israeli citizenship? What does the expansion of settlements in East Jerusalem mean for daily life on the ground? How are residency revocations being used as a political tool - and who is affected? What role does East Jerusalem play in the broader question of a future Palestinian state? Together we will explore these questions and many more, while gaining skills to express yourself in Hebrew. We will learn about different neighborhoods and sectors of Palestinian Jerusalemite society, about historical processes as well as current events. We will use a variety of different methods and sources of information: discussions, social media, video clips, activities, and presentations. This course is for learners who are beyond the basic conversational level and can communicate in Hebrew in the present and past tense and form their own sentences. You will get more creative and confident with the language and be able to communicate with more complexity. The heart of this course is speaking, but there will also be reading, writing and listening work.
