“Stories from the Qur’an” is a course that explores some of the most important narratives in Islamic tradition -- stories that have shaped religious belief, Arabic culture and language, and Palestinian cultural identity. Through close reading, discussion, and analyzing historical context, we will engage with Qur’anic stories as living narratives that continue to influence ethics, culture, and collective identity. The course focuses on selected stories from the Qur’an and the Hadith, including the story of creation and the first humans, Satan’s disobedience, the stories of different prophets according to Islam (e.g. Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus), and stories from the lifetime of Muhammad, such as Prophet Muhammad’s Night Journey, the Migration to Medina, and other stories. Participants will explore how these stories articulate themes of exile and return, justice and power, faith and doubt, while tracing their effects in Arabic culture, Palestinian storytelling, and everyday language. In this course, we’ll look at different theatrical styles and how they’ve been used in political contexts. We’ll get to know specific genres, the ideas behind them, and theatre groups and collectives that have treated theatre as a tool for political action and social change. Along the course, we will engage in creative exercises such as writing, text submission, video work, and other formats, with a focus on the creative side of theatre and its power to generate change through language and beyond. In this course, we will delve into Palestinian folk music, such as wedding songs and the various rituals of farmers and shepherds. In the traditional Palestinian wedding, there are different phases, and each phase has its own song, lyrics, and rhythm. We will get to know them and explore together the social roles of these rituals and how music and lyrics reflect them in particular. At the same time, there are other rituals that relied heavily on improvisation, and over time some of these improvised songs became a lasting part of Palestinian culture, passed down across generations. We will learn their stories together. What are the traditional musical instruments? What is the style of writing? The rhythm? Can wedding music be sung at a funeral? The character of Juha is considered one of the most well-known figures in Arab folk heritage. He shows up in countless anecdotes and stories that use both comedy and wisdom to offer important cultural and moral commentary. At times, he appears clever and critical; at other times, naively comical, which has made his stories a means of indirect social and political criticism. Juha’s tales did not remain confined to the Arab world; they also spread into Persian and Turkish traditions, and some versions reached popular literature in parts of Europe such as Italy. Abbas Mahmoud Al-Aqqad notes in his book “Juha: The Laughing and the Amusing” that Juha is not a single, clearly defined historical figure, but rather a cultural symbol in whom peoples' wisdom, satire, and life experiences accumulated across generations. This course will focus on reading these stories after translating or adapting them from Modern Standard Arabic into Palestinian colloquial Arabic, while explaining the Arab and Islamic cultural symbols found in them. Students will explore Juha’s character in depth and then ask together: Does Juha still exist among us today? Each class we'll take a burning issue, a big scandal, a social struggle, or an event or a person that recently made a lot of noise - something that (at least some) people in Israel today care about. We will ask - why is it interesting, and what lies beneath the surface of the issue? Come if you want to know what's going on here, or if you're already updated and want to share your thoughts with others and listen to other perspectives, and most of all come to speak and hear Hebrew about stuff that actually takes place in Hebrew! This course bridges between structured Beginner Hebrew to the less-filtered world of Intermediate, helping you to be creative and improvise with Hebrew even outside of your comfort zone of everyday topics and giving you tools to express ideas and opinions in Hebrew. With discussions, watching video clips, and reading short texts from social media and the news, we will explore complex topics in a way that is still accessible for advanced Beginners/nearly intermediate learners. In this advanced Hebrew course, we will look at how both mainstream and independent media in Israel have behaved during the war and over the past decade. We'll explore what is often left out of coverage, the topics that get the most attention, and the issues that are considered off-limits. We'll also analyze how the media reports on stories from outside Israel and how controversial issues are covered, thinking about how these representations shape public opinion. The course will include writing assignments that allow participants to creatively engage with the topics we discuss, though no prior experience in creative writing is required. By the end, you will have a better understanding of how media works in Israel and have improved your writing skills in a way that connects to the critical issues we cover. All advanced learners are welcome to this course.
