In Hebrew, the word misẖak (משחק) carries several meanings. It can refer to a game, such as a board game or a sporting event, but also to play, as in theatre, performance, and acting. This overlap opens up a productive political possibility: the chance to re-examine, reimagine, and “play with” the reality around us. Throughout this course, we will learn and play with Hebrew through a variety of methods that explore the many meanings of misẖak. We will engage with acting exercises, theatrical texts, and improvisation, alongside board games that reflect different periods in local history and raise questions about class, society, and culture. We are not here to excel at any of these activities. Rather, we will use them as tools for experimentation, allowing us to encounter Hebrew, and ourselves, from new perspectives. In this course, you are welcome to be competitive, but the goal is the process rather than the victory. So, ready, set... go! *** Early Bird Price Start at - 1400 NIS - Until 06/09 Reduced Price Start at - 1550 NIS - Until 04/10 Full Price Start at - 1700 NIS - Until first lesson of the course We have made a small change in our pricing structure and are now offering a sliding scale in order to give you the opportunity to donate 100 or 200 shekels when you buy a course. How do you talk about what’s happening around you in Arabic? In this course, current events become our classroom material. Every day, we’ll work with news from Palestine, Israel, and across the Arab world, selected and rewritten by our teachers into natural Palestinian Arabic, making real and relevant content accessible while keeping the language rich and challenging. We’ll build the vocabulary needed to understand and discuss current events, while practicing how to summarize stories, explain developments, express opinions, compare perspectives, and take part in more complex conversations in Arabic. The news will also give us reason to revisit grammar and push our language further. Through each story, we’ll work with more complex sentence structures, connectors, and ways of organizing and expressing ideas clearly through material that is current, relevant, and worth talking about. *** We have made a change in our pricing structure and are offering a sliding scale in order to give you the opportunity to donate 100 or 200 shekels to our scholarship & emergency fund.

How can we express nonbinary gender in such a binary language? What words can we use to express our gender and sexuality in Hebrew? What culture(s), history and power dynamics make up queerness in Israel-Palestine? Join Tal and TINAU to explore these questions and more. We’ll also be queering our Hebrew with multilingual slang and learning how to talk in more complex and accurate ways about our desires, boundaries and identities. Language comes from a societal context so we’ll also be learning about the queer communities in Israel-Palestine: activism and art, parties and poetry, stigma and social change, history and what’s red hot and current. The course content will be flexible around your own interests and priorities, so if you’ve got some burning questions, bring them! All advanced learners are welcome to this course. We will be using a variety of written, sound and video sources, interactive activities, and giving plenty of space for learners to express themselves and their ideas in speaking and writing. Grammar and other linguistic elements will be taught in an integrated way depending on the needs and interests of the students. Why do some people pronounce ח and ע differently to others and why does it matter? Is there a way of speaking Hebrew in a non-binary way? Was Hebrew a “dead language” before Ben Yehuda? Come learn all about Hebrew, in Hebrew! Each lesson will have two parts: in the first, we will learn intermediate-level grammar in a creative and meaningful way. No Thanks to mechanically memorising conjugations without understanding what you're doing, Yes Please to deep learning the systems and patterns of Hebrew to empower you to use the language with creativity and confidence. If the idea of learning grammar makes you sweat, don’t worry - our priority is accessibility. The topics will be flexible around the priorities and needs of the group and will likely include: demystifying the Hebrew verb system; future tense and imperative (command) verbs; “irregular” nouns, and more! In the second part of the class we will learn about historical, political and linguistic aspects of Hebrew. We’ll question the role of the Academy of the Hebrew Language, learn about linguistic (in)justice and Hebrew’s relationship to Arabic, Yiddish and Ladino, explore the history of many Hebrews, and consider how to queer this apparently binary language.
