In This Is Not a MixTape, Arabic songs become our texts for exploring language, grammar, and culture. Throughout the course, we’ll work with songs from different periods, regions, and genres, using their lyrics to examine complex grammatical structures, syntax, vocabulary, and expressions in context. Songs also give us a chance to explore the diversity of spoken Arabic. We’ll look at different dialects, registers, and linguistic choices, and consider how artists use language to create meaning, tell stories, express identity, and communicate political and social messages. Together, we will watch cooking shows, read menus and recipes, explore the past and present of local food culture - and maybe even cook ourselves!
