We will do this together through plenty of conversational practice and varied activities, learning to use more complex grammatical structures, the past tense, and plenty of reading and writing practice. Of course, This is Not an Ulpan, so - there will be opportunities to suggest topics and influence the pace and methods of the course, and learners will gain insights into the overall cultural and socio-political complexity of Israel. Through a multidisciplinary approach, students will examine the diverse roles that Palestinian women have played—as activists, artists, educators, writers, politicians, and community leaders—within the context of colonialism, displacement, resistance, and identity formation. Students will engage with biographical texts, memoirs, interviews, scholarly articles, and creative works to critically analyze the intersection of gender, nationality, and resistance. We'll explore what is often left out of coverage, the topics that get the most attention, and the issues that are considered off-limits. We'll also analyze how the media reports on stories from outside Israel and how controversial issues are covered, thinking about how these representations shape public opinion. The course will include writing assignments that allow participants to creatively engage with the topics we discuss, though no prior experience in creative writing is required. By the end, you will have a better understanding of how media works in Israel and have improved your writing skills in a way that connects to the critical issues we cover.
